I speak to more and more people these days that have trouble wearing earrings as their ears become irritated by base metals or even precious metals. For years I didn't wear earrings at all myself because everything I seemed to wear gave me that horrible scratchy ear feeling and my ears started to get sore and swollen almost straight away. The only thing I could wear was gold and, although I love gold to bits, the colour doesn't really suit my complexion.
It wasn't until a couple of years ago, when I discovered surgical steel earrings hooks, I realised that I could enjoy wearing earrings again. I should have put two and two together much earlier as I could only wear stainless steel watches without getting a reaction on my wrist, but sometimes I'm a bit slow on the uptake!
This discovery inspired me to ensure that all of the earrings in the Little Gems Jewels collection were made of surgical steel, so that most people will be able to wear them. My gold earring designs are surgical steel plated in 22ct gold and I find that I can wear these with ease too.
Hypoallergenic materials like surgical steel are less likely to cause an allergic reaction or are "low allergy" if you like. However, it really does depend on the person and what particular sensitivities you might have. The only way to know for sure is to try some earrings made from different materials and see how you get on.
Luckily it is really easy to swap over earring hooks on most dangly earring designs. If you have ever bought a pair of drop earrings in the past and love the design but can't wear them as they irritate your ears then I would recommend swapping them out for surgical steel, niobium or titanium earring hooks to see if you can give them a new lease of life.
All you need to do is open the loop at the bottom of the hook, add it to your earring, close the loop again and you're all set.
Do let me know how you get on. I'd love to hear that you are able to enjoy wearing your earrings again too.
